Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast

What a wonderful mantra.

It’s a principle used by the US Navy Seals in urban combat where precision and focus on getting a desired outcome when the odds of things going mortally wrong are high.

In the modern World, there’s a pressure to achieve everything by yesterday.

So we dive in, head first, coming out all guns blazing.

Doing as much as we can, working as hard as we can and as fast as we can.

Our bodies and minds operating at 100 miles per hour.

I understand and relate to how natural this is – we’re both keen to feel that buzz of success  and if you’re in pain and discomfort right now – you want to move away from that in double quick time.

But moving too fast, too soon can be dangerous.

You can quickly lose sight of your surroundings, racing in a direction you may soon realise is a dead end.

Leaving you feeling overwhelmed and stuck. Wondering how you veered off course and having to backtrack to get on the right path again.

Ironically, slowing you down from achieving your desired outcome.

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast.

When we slow everything down and go smoothly.

We can get lost in the present and do meaningful things consciously. Things that, if we’re fortunate, will benefit our future selves.

Also ironically, the more granular our focus can be, on what is right in front of us, the faster we will get to where we want to be.

The more you slow down and go smoothly, the more you will enjoy the ride.

Your rep speed.

The speed you eat at.

The speed you drive your car at.

The pace your brain and mouth works at.

The speed you rushing out the door in the morning.

You will make more impact, stay more aware of how you’re feeling and be able to course-correct along the way to keep you progressing by going smoother.

DON’T STOP

“Slow is smooth, but too slow is dead. Slow is smooth should not be used as justification for paralysis by analysis.

The central premise of this philosophy is movement—movement that is considered but also constant and unrelenting”

Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast.
