Discipline – the ability to control yourself, even in difficult situations.
How do we build it?
And why should we?
The primary definition is
“The practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience.”
I believe this is why discipline get a bad reputation. And why we may see being disciplined as a chore or an inconvenience.
If we don’t behave in a certain way we get punished.
And in some ways that might be true because as Artistole said…
So we have a choice to make then. If we want to grow and achieve our goals.
Discipline builds confidence and trust in yourself by keeping the promises you make to yourself. The small things done daily over and over again.
The discipline to stop and disconnect.
The discipline to show up daily.
To listen to yourself. And to your body.
To be silent.
Any position of responsibility – personally or professionally – demands discipline.
The more you repeat the behaviours – the more automatic they become – and you won’t have to think as much about doing them – you can feel them flow more.
From The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma
“Discipline is built by consistently performing small acts of courage.
The more you nurture the embryo of self discipline, the more it will mature.
Will power is the essential virtue of a fully actualised life.”
